France has reported its first case of Ebola during the latest outbreak after a doctor returning from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) tested positive.
The heatwave that has engulfed France is underscoring the country’s lack of preparedness for climate change. Researcher and climate scientist François Gemenne laments that this is only considered a crisis during heatwaves, saying that France urgently needs to renovate its buildings – and reconsider its aversion to air conditioning.

Stephane Delapre, a farmer in Beauvoir-sur-Mer, near the western coast, said half his chickens had died of suffocation on Monday.

The severe heatwave sweeping France has forced the early closures of top Paris tourist hotspots the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre museum, their respective managers said Tuesday.
Much of France remains under severe heat alert on June 23 after the country experienced its hottest afternoon and night since records began in 1947. Temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius were forecast for cities including Bordeaux, Rennes and Toulouse. The extreme heat has already proven deadly - two children were found dead inside a parked car on June 22, while 40 people have drowned over the past few days as they sought to cool off.
The French government has announced disciplinary action against a magistrate and two gendarmerie officers over the handling of a suspect in child abuse case, which has lead to public outcry. This comes on the heels of a report which pointed to serious failings of the justice system, particularly with regards to minors.
Most of the victims were young people swimming in unsupervised areas, officials said.
As France experienced its hottest day yet in its latest heatwave, two children, aged 2 and 4 were found dead inside a parked car in the country's south. It comes after three elderly people died in their homes from heat, according to authorities. Temperatures were forecast to reach up to 43 degrees Celsius across the territory on June 22 and some 39 million people are now under "red alert" warnings for extreme heat.
France saw its hottest night since records began in 1947 from Monday to Tuesday, with temperatures across the country averaging 21.6C after darkness fell, according to the country’s weather agency. In Paris, some without air conditioning at home spent the night in parks to get relief from the heat.
After an exceptionally hot day yesterday, with temperatures above 40°C in some cities, the heatwave continues: 54 départements are on red alert this Tuesday 23 June in France.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned on Monday, paving the way for Britain to have its seventh prime minister in just over a decade. France is seeing a second consecutive heatwave in less than a month. Half the country is now under red alert as temperatures are expected to rise to 43°C in the southwestern city of Bordeaux and 39°C in the capital Paris. According to weather service Méteo-France, out of 51 heatwaves recorded nationwide since 1947, two-thirds have occurred since 2000 and about half of those episodes in the last 15 years.
